First, let's review exactly what ACORN is. The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now was established in 1970 with the goal of bringing minority, poor and otherwise disenfranchised American citizens into the Democratic process. In regards to this current election, they have registered 1.3 million new voters in 18 states, including California. Of these 1.3 million new voter registrations, it has been reported nationally that somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 registrations may be in question. Lets do the math. That amounts to .3 to .6 percent of registrations may be bogus. Less than 1%. Keep in mind, that ACORN is a federally regulated organization and, as such, are required to turn in ALL voter registration forms they collect, including the ones that they feel may be less than legitimate. They are NOT required to review or otherwise point out possible bogus registration forms. But they do. It was ACORN, themselves, who flagged questionable registration forms as they were sent to national election authorities.
Now, ask yourselves, why would the Republican Party want to make such a big deal out of such a tiny problem? Me thinks it is a huge smokescreen to take the focus off of their own voter shenanigans. After doing a healthy amount of research late into the night, I have discovered that the GOP has a long history of voter suppression, dating back to the days of the Civil Rights movement. And, so far this year, Republicans are already being held responsible for possible attempts at voter suppression in at least 9 states, many of them in the south and many of them in 'swing' states. In several states, drivers license info and/or Social Security info has been used to screen out 'unqualified' voters, a blatant abuse of Federal Election Law. In still other areas, voter 'caging' has been utilized by Republican election officials. Voter 'caging' is when certified mail is sent to a list of addresses, and when no one is available to sign for the mail, a list is made suggesting these people registered illegally with no proper address. Just this week, in Macomb County, Michigan, lists of foreclosed properties were used for this purpose. By the way, people who have moved since registering to vote can provide their new address on Election Day at the polls, and thus, still legally vote.
To set the record straight, I am NOT saying that John McCain initiated the above voter suppression. But, at the same time, he hasn't exactly done anything to alleviate the problem, has he?
One more very important fact about the new ACORN registrations. Of the 1.3 million new registered voters, an estimated 60-70 percent are people of color. Over HALF of the new registered voters are 18-29 yrs old. Is it any wonder that the Republican Party is freaking out?!?!?!
All of this pre-planned ACORN voter registration hoopla is leading to Election Day, when the Republican Party will be screaming 'voter fraud' after losing. Mark my words.
Special Note: Big debate tonite. My prediction this time is an easy one. McCain will come off looking old and even more delirious. Obama? He'll shine as the superior candidate, per usual.
